tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/daily-ratings/tv-ratings-friday-march-24-2017/It's actually risen in the 18-49 in the second week, and its viewers remain around the million mark. TVD really does stand out, it was detrimental to The Originals ratings although at this point, the CW have probably put themselves into a corner if actors have been released from their contracts. I don't think it'll make a difference but I'm happy with the CW having egg on their face on this... after all, other than cancellation- they really have played every bad timeslot angle here, down to a delayed mid season premiere with little advertising on a Friday.

Do we know for sure the contracts are cancelled, or are we speculating based on JoMo being caught at the X-men table read?
Glad ratings are on the up, even though I suspect it doesn't matter at this point.

But taking everything into consideration, including the fact that JoMo hasn't bothered to do promo vids or even tweet about his own show, I honestly believe that he has moved on. They're just waiting to announce.

Seems like they would have announced at the start of the season. Those kinds of announcements can bring in lost viewers. "Hey, remember us? We're almost done, wanna see how it all ends?"

Opposite in this case I think. They baited the Klaroline fans shamelessly now a good chunk of that fandom has tuned in. They legitimately expect Caroline to show up at the end of S4 or be cast in S5; they expect Klaroline moments when Alaric & the twins show up. And when/if they announce the cancellation, they'll bait fans again with, "another spinoff!"

This time baiting and previous baiting to KC fandom are different. There seems to be something going on this time rather than empty baiting... I do feel sorry for Kc fans who are just watching the whole season to see one scene of Kc BUT dont disregard that purpose of watching TO this year in addition to seeing that one KC scene is to get enough rating so that TO gets another season leading to promised Kc in season 5.

The Klaroline fans are not the uptick- that petition a few years back was taken by international viewers who could fudge and the numbers of US Klaroline viewers who would be Nielsen viewers would be under 5k. A ship's viewership would be hard pressed to generate a significant uptick. You also have to remember Kevin Williamson is a bit shameless when it comes to shipping... which is how we got from the books where Katherine loved both brothers to 'Stefan' goggles and why the triangle which was done did the interview arounds on an endgame that frankly would've sucked and not just because nobody cares about Matt.
Kevin wanted the Klaroline letter, whether it translates to any scene beyond implied 'no matter how long it takes'- I trust Julie, were they to get Candice Accola, I'm sure they would write her character to 'The Originals' standard but it's beside the point. The uptick is the combination of an 8PM timeslot and no longer being behind TVD because the viewers were still there in DVR delayed viewing last year.
The CW is obsessed with shipper baiting- I think the only show that is exempt is Supernatural but there isn't a ship on all of the CW that would significantly boost ratings- when Alaric and the twins show up is when people know the crossover is happening so that's the episode with any sign, and still, it's the TVD universe and not a ship alone.
On contracts- as they are usually five to six seasons on the CW- they can renew and any new projects would come second which in retrospect is why PR for that new X-Men pilot came up with that- the CW can make them getting Joseph Morgan difficult. If the ratings from Friday hold and the new show/network rating situation is desperate enough, the CW may exercise its right on the cast and renew but don't count on a renewal announcement straight away- Pedowitz wanted to end the show this year despite what he publicly says and even on steady week-to-week ratings, it could be a 'to the last second' thing.
