My understanding is that you have to be at peace to reach it (from what Esther said about Jenna, and later on we see Lexi vanish into light as the Other Side was collapsing). But I find that to be kind of inconsistent, because Katherine was dragged to hell, and she had no qualms about the evil shit she did. Which should be the case for Elijah as well, with all the stuff he's got behind that red door he shouldn't be able to easily find peace. But I have no doubt now we'll get that schmaltzy reunion. My understanding is this:
Even if you were a supernatural creature, if you were young (let's say Henrik was a witch) and died pure/innocent, you didn't go to the Other Side - you immediately found peace.
But I guess most teen/adult supernatural creatures don't die pure/innocent, so they went to the Other Side. Jenna was the exception because she remained innocent. Once there, it was possible to find peace. You made the choice to leave, never to return. For some (Esther, Mikael, Ansel, Lexi, Anna, Vicki), they stayed for years, never finding peace - including Ansel and Esther, but for different reasons.
And then while the Other Side still existed, there was Hell - or a version of hell - one that Katherine and others got dragged off to. That hell was supposedly destroyed but was it the only hell? It shouldn't be. Because the truth is, no: Elijah, Klaus, Hayley, etc. do not deserve a peaceful afterlife. Sacrificing yourself for your own child doesn't/shouldn't negate a thousand years of mayhem and murder.
But I 100% think you're right: we'll get a sappy happily ever afterlife scene.

I get tired of the one-sidedness. Hope mentions that Stefan's journal and whatever books Alaric wrote all depict Klaus as a villain and Elijah as his henchman. I'd bet all the white oak stakes Klaus keeps pulling out of his ass that none of them mention that time Alaric was an evil Original. Or that Matt/Elena/Jeremy killed Finn and Kol (and their entire sire lines). Or Hayley's part in the killing of hybrids. Or that time Elena literally stabbed Bex in the back, after pretending to befriend her. Stop telling me it's all the Originals' fault, because I know it goes both ways. Oh, my god, I didn't even think about this! You are so right!
They're still trying to depict them as terrible monsters who will only find redemption by sacrificing themselves to save Hope.
God, I'm tired. This is exhausting.
Agree about all of it, and I don't want to keep going with this universe because of it. Tired of the inconsistency. I'd have been fine with leaving it as it stood at the end of last season, with the family making the ultimate (for them) sacrifice of not staying together to ensure that Hope could grow up free and happy. Nothing about this season has made sense to me. And realistically, I don't think Legacies will last more than 3 seasons max. Hope is 15/16 right now, so how do they keep going with a magical school once she's graduated? They may bring in guest spots to old and loved characters (Girl Meets World did this), but I don't think it has enough power on its own. 100% this.
I think Hope is supposed to be 15 and they're jumping two years. That'll leave about two years at the school and they'll probably stretch it into three. Personally, I think it's going to flop. Then again, I was 100% certain it would never be picked up.

AND another inconsistency:
Klaus is able to withstand a stake to the heart. Tyler staked him in the heart in TO S1 and Klaus stood there, talking and laughing at him.
Alaric shoots him with a crossbow and he goes down.
