It's sad that a character who has been getting better throughout the seasons just regressed back so much. He's a villain and I get that, but I'm so disappointed in him. He's become a deadbeat dad and he's constantly putting his daughter in danger by his toxic co-dependency drama.
If this is Davina or Hayley, who hasn't lived that long, then I'd get it. But Klaus is over 1000 years old. He should have his stuff together, but chooses to go in the opposite direction because he's afraid of being vulnerable.
I know people like Klaus and he's a fan favourite, but when he's regressing instead of growing then isn't that a problem?
spoilers - I suppose Hayley's death will also wake him up, but still. A death shouldn't be the answer. He should have smartened up by now.

A death shouldn't be the answer. He should have smartened up by now. You are right. Klaus has not shown major improvement in his character during the course of his show. It will be wrong to say that he has shown none though. He sacrificed himself for his daughter and family twice (once for the Hollow and once at end of s3 IIRC) in the past five season. Would TVD Klaus have done it? Klaus is a selfish guy so for him to do something like that for someone other than himself was a big step. It was definitely a big deal for a selfish guy like kLaus but it was not executed properly iMO. I would have seen it more of a sacrifice if I had seen him actually missing Hope e.g him thinking about Hope when he was chained by Marcel or him actually talking about Hope more with Rebekah or Caroline when we came back at the start of season 5 OR him even trying to contact her like Kol did. We were convinced that Klaus had really missed Elijah because they made an effort to show us how much he missed him. This show has always put more emphasis on his relationship with Elijah more than his relationship with Hope. 1000 years and his show down with Mikeal in s2 SHOULD have helped him move on and accept his circumstances. Until end of s1, until he actually held his daughter in his hands he didn't have any REAL reason to be better person. His relationship with Elijah didn't hold enough justification for the shove he needed to change himself so they gave him a small child. But can we really expect a person who is 1000 years old, an arrogant and selfish ass who has lived like kings and what not to change just over night or for that matter in 15 years? baby steps... that is what he has been unsuccessfully doing. I think if Klaus had actually seen Hope grow up he would have made more of an effort to change himself because then he would have seen that his actions are causing damage to his daughter. Right now, it is out of sight out of mind situation. That incentive, the reason Klaus was given this baby plot is not there for him strive for better choice. Hayley's death will push him in that direction again. Until now Klaus knew that Hayley is there for Hope, another reason he willingly abandoned his daughter. His dependency on Elijah will never let him become a responsible person on his own. There comes a point in one's life when one needs to grow up, leave the nest. Klaus has not. Elijah has been there for him to influence his decisions for 1000 years. It will take more than seven years to get out of under that influence. Klaus is a flawed and weak character who depends on other people to direct him on right path. Until he gets over that dependency how can he become a better person? You are right he has regressed in the past seven years. Guess who is not his life to direct him on right path; Elijah and Hope. I am not sure what I am hoping for Klaus towards the end of the show but it would not be a bad ending if Elijah is totally out of his life and Klaus is able to make a right/ good choice for his daughter without him being there. I would have loved it if by this point in the show I could say "OMG is this the Klaus we saw in s1? Look how far he has come."

We were convinced that Klaus had really missed Elijah because they made an effort to show us how much he missed him. This show has always put more emphasis on his relationship with Elijah more than his relationship with Hope. Very true. He has a toxic co-dependency thing with Elijah that he needs to work out. I want the show to go deeper into his relationship with Hope though, which is why I'm so disappointed in him. I get that he's afraid of her seeing his bad side. And when she 'visited' him he was scarred by it. But, and maybe I'm wrong, the reason why he stayed away from Hope wasn't to protect her from him but because he did that to punish himself. He has to make himself this evil victim to justify not calling or face timing Hope. He was killing his enemies for Hope's sake, according to him, but again he did it for himself more than her. I think Hayley has been sending him pictures every now and then though. They were still on speaking terms during the seven years, so he's known what Hope's been up to and possibly seen pictures and videos. I don't know if that's okay with me anymore though. He did regress during the seven years because he didn't have Elijah and Hope around, but the level of his regression is disappointing to me. The fact that he didn't have a relationship with Hope is sad and the fact that when he came back to NO he tried to kill Hayley's boyfriend is horrible. I still like Klaus and he's a compelling character to watch, but I don't know what to say about him this season.

Klaus hasn't had any stable development in a while now. They teased us with this "redemption through baby" arc, and showed him struggling with it, but any and all personal growth we get for him is always undermined or blatantly ignored/walked back.
