The Originals-5.01 'One Wrong Turn On Bourbon' Discussion Thread
THE RETURN TO NEW ORLEANS — When a mysterious disappearance brings Klaus back to New Orleans, Hope looks forward to the prospect of seeing her father again. However, when the dark magic that had been keeping them apart begins to manifest in dangerous ways across the city, Vincent turns to Ivy for guidance about what it may mean. Elsewhere, Marcel returns to New Orleans amidst increased tensions between the supernatural factions, while Freya makes a decision about her future with Keelin. Finally, Roman's surprise visit to the Mikaelson compound forces Hope to reveal some dark truths about her family.
Want, need Marcel and Hope interactions- I need the brotherly/sisterly relationship they started from Season One- I melt every time there's a heartwarming scene between them and having gotten more quality Uncle Kol, this is essential on my last season wishlist. Klaus/Hope/Marcel scenes- especially Marcel being forced to tell Hope she should listen to her dad would be too hypocritically perfect. I assume the dark magic is the Hollow, it makes me think about the Harvest and that ninety percent of the problems were caused by the Ancestors treating New Orleans witches as if they didn't have the right to know anything when full explanations as to what they were holding back, why their power was so important. Everything still makes a twisted kind of sense- dying and a long time dead separated from the living does something to a person but the Ancestors have caused more problems for New Orleans in zealot measures than the supernatural community tensions or the Mikaelsons.
I don't think it bodes one way or the other with Hayley- as someone pointed out- Charmed, which was an absolute powerhouse had massive budget cuts and it's common to have cast absences to try and balance out costs- we don't know what the circumstances were when the show was renewed for the fifth season, the cast may of well have been released from their contracts since the CW is notoriously cheap. Also, Phoebe might have been under a five season series regular contract starting from The Secret Circle which meant that she fulfilled her end by the end of Season Four of The Originals... likewise what we see of the main cast.

Haven't we always heard rumors of Hayley's supposed absence each season and she's usually back within an episode? So the rumor that she's not going to be around for 2-5 episodes, only to return and get killed off seems like wishful thinking to me. However...they do have to make room for the new special in town (Hope). They only have 13 episodes to wrap up the Originals story (the siblings) and make the audience fall in love with Hope - enough so that she can star in her own spin-off. Something had to give and I'd rather it be Hayley than any of the siblings.
I've always doubted that the spin-off will actually happen and from what little I've seen of Hope - I can't see her carrying her own show. But, that's just me.

I have a feeling that PT does not want to work anymore and hence less appearance this season granted my prediction of her not being there in 2 more episodes is right. I also read somewhere that she was not willing/ hesitant to return for this season. It makes sense to kill her now but even if with her death she can make a lot of appearance in the first 5 episodes at least. Who was IVY? I wouldnt be surprised if Freya is choosing her family over Keelin. I wonder what Roman is there to tell Hope. Is he going to reveal something her family had been sheltering her from? That would not be good. |

I'm guessing Ivy is a new character - I assume a fellow witch. I honestly think that Vincent's "One of us should be happy" line is foreshadowing Freya's demise. There was another sentence in the first episode said by Freya ".... our lives" or something like that. I think that too foreshadowed her demise. I think I mentioned in my review about the episode. Oh right about Roman, had forgotten about that bit. |

Want, need Marcel and Hope interactions- I need the brotherly/sisterly relationship they started from Season One- What's funny is that Marcel is connected to Hope through Klaus - via the brother/sister thing, and through Hayley, because he saved her as a child and was the reason why she was able to hate screw Klaus. I am...conflicted. I don't watch the show. Haven't watched since the end of S2. The only reason I'm keeping up via live tweets and recaps is because of Klaroline. But I am conflicted because this season and last I've been wanting to tune in, even without Klaroline. I really liked Summer F as young Hope and I really liked the idea behind the Hollow. And this season...I mean, if Hayley's gonna be missing for a number of episodes. BUT - I don't want to give Plec or the CW my views. I'm gonna wait.
I'll post some thoughts about tonight's show tomorrow.

Looking more and more like Hayley will die. And after tonight, I'm actively rooting against a Hope spinoff, because I can NOT root for this girl. I go back and forth on Hope. On one hand, I understand the angst; on the other - I'm really, really tired of teen angst on this show. Honestly, I'm trying not to judge because I'm just going by live tweets and recaps. I will say from what I've seen (clips, previews) and heard (live tweets, recaps), I don't think that Hope can carry her own show. Granted, it's only been two episodes. I've always had my doubts about the spin-off, now I'm a little more certain it won't happen. In addition - I don't think viewers care about Hope as her own person. They care because she's a Mikaelson. They care about her and her interactions with her family - who are definitely NOT going to be a part of the spinoff, except for the maybe occassional appearance by Rebekah. I say Rebekah because Claire Holt has proven she's willing to guest star. This season will be interesting because they're going to juggle making Hope her own person (her MF scenes) and finishing the story of NOLA and the Hollow. |

Weird episode, an Originals episode without Rebekah, Hayley, Elijah, Kol, Davina (cant be her role on The Arrangement, can it?). Or Cami.
A lot of foreboding and I hate snakes. The teen love story reminded me a bit of TVD's early days and was bearable/believable. Marcel's now hurting kids and having acceptance problems again is so last seasons.
Klaus and Hope worked, like with Kid Hope, that's a good thing since apparently (TVLine) they grow closer.

Some thoughts... 1. Freya advising Vincent to see a SeerGirl. What in the ever-loving actual **** are you thinking? Sending Vincent to a seer?!?! I don't care how "cute" she is or how she's supposed to be, "the best." Did you seriously learn nothing from the last time your famiy believed a seer's prophecy?! Visions. Are. Fallible. Visions are open to interpretation. Visions can be self-fulfiling if you make the wrong choice. WHY would you put any faith in them!? Especially after all the harm that came from the last one you believed?!
2. The Salvatore School and HopeThey introduced the Salvatore School in the finale of TVD and in TO S4 as a Narnia-like place where supernatural kids could be safe and free to be themselves. I never agreed with dumping Hope off at the Salvatore School, even though it was a sure-fire way to get Caroline inserted into TO's story. But, my understanding was that Hayley wanted Hope to A) have friends her own age and B) learn to value friendships and not just family "always and forever." The reality is that the Salvatore School has a bullying problem and Hope "doesn't fit in." Which doesn't make a damn lick of sense to me. Yes, Hope is different, but as far as anyone else at that school knows, barring Alaric and Caroline, she's just a powerful witch. No one knew she was a Mikaelson. No one knew she's a tri-bred. If she doesn't fit in, it's because she's holding herself back. In addition, Hayley's wish that Hope would learn to value friendship is unfulfilled. Now, I didn't see the episode, so if I'm mistaken, let me know and I'll edit. But Hope LET Marcel wall up Henry. All she did was tell Henry to relax. In what world does the feisty know-it-all teenager allow her friend to be walled up? They're trying to create a spin-off starring this girl - the new Elena (but not Elena). Can you imagine Elena or Caroline or Bonnie allowing one of their circle to be walled up? Now, that being said - I probably would've rolled my eyes IF Hope had intervened and spoke up. BUT it would have shown her trying. It would have shown her to be like her mother - fighting for her friends, for a member of her pack. It would have shown her taking responsibility. 3. Klaus taking the blame for Hope's actionsNah. Nope, nope, nope. I get Klaus is feeling guilty (as he should). But nah. In Cami's words (or something like it), you're responsible for your own actions. Yes, Hope was hurting and wouldn't have done it if Klaus had been around. But she still made a conscious choice to do what she did. She's responsible fo her own actions. She's 15, a Mikaelson, and a powerful witch with heightened wolf and vampires senses, which means she's impulsive and controlled by her emotions, but she's old enought to know the difference between right and wrong. And she knew it was wrong to A) turn Henry and B) kidnap her mother. 4. The real curse of the Mikaelsons
So Freya and Keelin broke up. Is anyone surprised? In Freya's words, "I can't love you and my family at the same time." Every one who has ever gotten close to the Mikaelsons, whether friend or lover, has died or been left behind. Sometimes by their own sibling's hand or manipulations (Klaus killed Gia; Klaus contrived to have the humans kill the witches, which included Celeste; Klaus killed numerous lovers of Rebekah). Sometimes they had to run and leave them behind (Elijah and the Strix. Klaus and Stefan.) Sometimes they get caught in the crossfire (Cami. Jackson). The only reason Marcel lived is because he got lucky and managed to escape the fire Mikael set (or, my personal head canon: he made a deal with Mikeal and Marcel being tied up was just for show). The only reason Marcel continues to live is because he's been powered up. The only reason Hayley survived for so long is because she's Hope's mother. And they powered her up, too. And now, Elijah has to have amnesia in order to kill her off.  It's why Caroline could never fall for Klaus in TVD. She knew. And despite her feelings for him (yes, she had feelings for him and could have fallen from him easily), she made the decision not to fall for him (any more than she already had). And that's what pissed me off about the whole, "Cami is more mature than Caroline" debate. Caroline Forbes made the number one, most mature decision on either show, when she was 18 years old. And even though I'm rooting for Klaroline, in the back of my mind, I'm thinking: how will it be any different? There is always going to be danger. There is always going to be someone out for revenge. The only way Caroline survives (and Keelin, and I guess Davina, for that matter, even though I could honestly care less) is if every sibling opens their heart to their sibling’s significant other, and protects them the way they protect each other. And hopefully will never be in a position of choosing between saving Elijah or Caroline. Or Rebekah or Davina. Or Keelin or Freya. The other side of that is also having these significant others accept that family is everything to the Mikaelsons. If you enter into a relationship with any of them, you have to understand that it's a package deal. I think Caroline understands that - and understands better than anyone the bond between Elijah and Klaus. I think Keelin will come to understand that and I hope - if she lives - that Davina will too. 5. Elijah, amnesiaI don't think think there's going to be a Halijah reunion. One where Elijah remembers her. Supposedly, it's her death that triggers his memories to return. And I don't think Elijah's going to die and reunite with her in the afterlife. What no one wants to remember is this: Elijah has been in love before. Three times in his life, plus Hayley. He loved them all. Truly loved them all. And he moved on. He will move on again. It doesn't lessen or cheapen their love or what they had. He's immortal and time heals. Elijah currently has amnesia and has forgotten Hayley. He's met someone new. I'm assuming he has some deep feelings for her as well. When his memories return, he's not going to magically forget the past 7 years. He'll remember her. And the feelings they shared. Elijah is going to be one screwed up, big 'ole, HOT mess. His feelings for Hayley will return, along with grief and guilt over her death. Guilt that he had to be compelled in order to protect his family. Guilt that he couldn't be there for her. Guilt that he didn't have enough time with her. Guilt that he couldn't/wouldn't save her. Guilt that he killed her (?). Guilt that Hope no longer has her mother. Guilt that while he loved Hayley, he loved another. Guilt that he was happy with another. And, most likely, guilt that he still has feelings for the new girl (unless she's shady and/or dies). Whatever guilt Elijah has faced in the past, will be nothing compared to what he's going to feel. Okay, I think that's it for now. Man, for someone who doesn't watch the show, I sure do have a lot of thoughts and comments!  |

Klaus what were you thinking trying to kill Hayley's boyfriend? This kid. Really? I find myself extremely disappointed by Klaus this season. After everything that happened, he should have been there for Hope instead of being a deadbeat psycho. I get that he was afraid to talk to her because she witnessed him killing people, but he should have still spoken to her. She's a werewolf with emotional issues, plus she's going through puberty - it's no wonder why she's lashing out like this. She's seeking any kind of attention, without caring about the consequences. I found it sad that she has a tally of her good points and bad, because she's going to feel like a monster soon when a certain someone dies. Here's what I'm wondering though, why didn't anyone think of making a necklace for Hope to control her emotions? She is a witch, but she's also a werewolf too and has the temperament of one too. The previews look like it's going to be about Elijah, but to be honest I don't care about him right now. I want to see what other messed up stuff is happening in New Orleans and whether or not Vincent will survive the episode without having a heart attack. Some thoughts... 1. It's one thing for Freya to see a Seer, but for Vincent? The guy who is already about to have a stroke due to the amount of stress he's in? This is only going to make his blood pressure worse. And it did, to the point he snapped and said that the future can be changed when it's clear that he doesn't believe that lol. Poor Vincent. It won't be a big bad who gets him, it's his damn heart. To be fair to Hope, she's also a teen who wants attention from her dad, regardless of whether it's good attention or bad. She might call Henry a friend, but it wasn't a true friendship where she'd fight for him. She understood that he had to be punished for the vampire thing and keeping him locked up for a year or two is better than him being out and potentially killed. Klaus is acting like a father here though. He wants to protect her, but he doesn't know how. I don't think anyone knows how except Hayley, since she was able to actually lecture Hope properly while making her take responsibility for her own actions. It's actually kind of funny when you think about it. Hayley is the bad cop, because she was around more, while Klaus is the one who will baby Hope even when he should discipline her properly. He can't really do that at this point, since he's been a deadbeat for so long, but he should start trying after this. It might get to the point where Hope is lashing out and Klaus will have to put his foot down and tell her to stop. |

4. The real curse of the Mikaelsons The Mikaelsons just need to get over themselves and stop thinking that family and love are two separate entities. You don't have to reject your love interest for the sake of family and you don't have to reject your family for your love interest. That's why Rebekah and Marcel could never work out, because he wanted her to leave her family for him. The two need to be harmonious in order for it to work. Keelin has a chance because she told Freya that she'd be here for her and her family, which is why I think the couple will live. The show just wants angst, which is stupid. I really hate the romance on this show. It's always so stupid. The only one who has it right is Kol, who is there for his family but he also won't give up Davina. This is why he's the best Mikaelson. He understands what balance means. Can I mention something else about Marcel, he wants Rebekah to chose between him and family, but he always put work ahead of her. Why does she have to chose and he never does? I really hope the show stops making them a thing. Let them both move on and realize that they're happier apart than together. Not on this show....never on this show.  I really wish the writers would just let them be apart since their relationship was toxic. Both put the other on a pedestal and never looked deeper than they wanted. Hayley made the right chose to break things off, but if they have them come back together without working out their issues, then what's the point? The human seems to make Hayley and Hope happy and Elijah has a vamp chick he's into. They can still care for one another, but be apart. ...I'm super bias though, because the Originals with no romance is my kind of the Originals. |

But romance was never a strong suit in this show, so I don't expect any improvement on this front. 5. Elijah, amnesiaI don't think think there's going to be a Halijah reunion. One where Elijah remembers her. Supposedly, it's her death that triggers his memories to return. And I don't think Elijah's going to die and reunite with her in the afterlife. What no one wants to remember is this: Elijah has been in love before. Three times in his life, plus Hayley. He loved them all. Truly loved them all. And he moved on. He will move on again. It doesn't lessen or cheapen their love or what they had. He's immortal and time heals. Elijah currently has amnesia and has forgotten Hayley. He's met someone new. I'm assuming he has some deep feelings for her as well. When his memories return, he's not going to magically forget the past 7 years. He'll remember her. And the feelings they shared. Elijah is going to be one screwed up, big 'ole, HOT mess. His feelings for Hayley will return, along with grief and guilt over her death. Guilt that he had to be compelled in order to protect his family. Guilt that he couldn't be there for her. Guilt that he didn't have enough time with her. Guilt that he couldn't/wouldn't save her. Guilt that he killed her (?). Guilt that Hope no longer has her mother. Guilt that while he loved Hayley, he loved another. Guilt that he was happy with another. And, most likely, guilt that he still has feelings for the new girl (unless she's shady and/or dies). Whatever guilt Elijah has faced in the past, will be nothing compared to what he's going to feel. Okay, I think that's it for now. Man, for someone who doesn't watch the show, I sure do have a lot of thoughts and comments! I thought Hayley was the third love. Dude seems to be rather reluctant to be in a real relationship, probably because Klaus kills them. I agree though, he'll move on. I don't think he'll be dead by the end of the season. He may or may not find another, but I don't think that is or has ever been of high importance to him. Family is always first. |
