The Vampire Diaries- 8.16 "I Was Feeling Epic"
OLD FRIENDS - With the fate of Mystic Falls at stake, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) must fight their greatest enemy for one last battle.
So we're finally here and the end of The Vampire Diaries- I wish we had IMDB but this will have to do. I can see Bonnie surviving in one form or another but as for who is likely to die and who isn't comes down to the tone of the episode... if Matt ends up being the death, well- he is someone the writers protected for eight years. Final episodes remove all bets- and as far as Klaus making a guest star appearance, I can see it being as a reference or a hallucination.

Can't believe it is over! So I guess we'll get some action when they dispatch Katherine before the cheesy stuff starts. And I'm actually happy to see Elena again, even if she'll probably scold Stefan for killing Enzo while excusing Damon for killing Tyler. I wonder whether we get another time jump "whee are they now" style, when Damon races Caroline with Grandma Elena and Grandpa Stefan (if he makes it) in their wheelchairs.

I too think Bonnie will somehow survive but you never know with JP. Her fate and overuse of magic has been mentioned in interviews. I think Damon, Stefan or Matt, anyone of them can die. We will definitely hear Klaus voice over not just reference or hallucination. They keep on saying again and again that it is going to be very emotional today and Ian and Paul have basically prepared all fans to be "satisfied" by the ending which makes me wonder what is their definition of satisfaction?

Time jump is definitely going to happen. Wheelchair might not sadly. That would have been epic. I wonder if Damon will let go of Elena WHile Caroline will let go of Stefan?

I spent the last half of the episode crying my eyes out. It was so good and the sacrifice did end up mirroring the repaired relationship. Only in the television series, it was Stefan who broke their relationship by making his brother turn so him taking the ultimate step... the fact they showed so many people at peace like Vicki and Tyler, it really felt full circle and the best thing is, this is the ending the show deserved. The brothers will be together again one day and they do so after having finally come full circle and we're spared that terrible fake spoiler about Stefan and Elena. The sacrifice was definitely the right choice and anyone else would have felt cheap.
Stefan felt like the TVD choice than copying another series. His death wasn't a 'make everything better' but a genuine loss- and they actually had common sense which is missing from too many shows. Of course, he would be on vervain and would do everything to save the brother he once said there was no humanity, goodness or kindness. The payoff from the first season was amazing.
Bonnie will see Enzo again, but she gets to enjoy her life and that scene with her entire bloodline was amazing. Take that Ancestors (in fact, it wouldn't shock me to learn that they know the peace people can find past the Other Side and truly finding peace, but this way they cling onto the living like parasites... I hope that Davina will somehow find peace).

Only Katherine was terrible, I remember her much funnier and smarter than that. Even Damon recognized her this time unlike in 1x22 lol.

I'd hope so... how many times has Katherine pulled that stunt now? She was always petty, and she was often foiled because she was vindictive- look at how she became human. She was furious at Elena for driving Elijah away than acknowledging he picked his family over her (didn't help he had a dagger at the time). Stefan got Damon's place from 'The Fury'. In the books, Katherine offered to spare his life, for them to be together after Elena and Stefan were dead and Damon told Katherine; 'Go to hell' and Stefan said "Burn in hell". It was a nice mirror symmetry from the books and I was reminded heavily of 'The Fury'. Katherine was more like Aurora in 'The Fury'- Klaus's influence had broken her mind and she was deranged- she was killed by Elena in the books because she was over confident and by a sacrifice, it was the only way for Elena to take her down... just substitute sunlight for hellfire.

I watched a clip of the last few minutes.
1. Matt's voice SUPER annoying. 2. Really glad Bonnie lived and got the hell outta dodge so she can live her life and stop with the self-sacrificing. 3. Opening a school for young & gifted children's was Stefan's final wish? Um...okay. I guess. 4. I can live with the Klaroline ending.

"There was a conversation on the table where Stefan and Caroline [Candice King] were going to leave Mystic Falls and take off together and find special, gifted children and bring them to the school and take care of them," Williamson reveals. "That would be his living amends. But for all the harm and death Stefan has caused, I was like, 'Really?' I don't really see Stefan as being a nun. If Stefan was really going to make things right, he should die for his brother. He should give his brother what his brother really wants, which is a human life and humanity and the woman that he loves."
That is KW explanation for killing Stefan. Does not go with the plot. If anyone who had been punishing himself and trying to redeem during the whole series it had been Stefan. I guess he was the only one who did the despicable stuff. Damon deserved his happily ever after all the stunts he had pulled?! I am confused, what was his redemption? Seems like Kevin didnt believe that Damon did anything wrong.
Even JP said that Damon has gotten away with a lot of bad stuff he had done so why does he get to live and have his happily ever after and not Stefan?
Stefan's death does not make a lick of sense.

Kevin Williamson is nothing like hyped is what I'll say on the matter. He had this super-idealized version of certain characters in his head which was why Elena as a character took a while to develop her own spark and so on. It's why to him- Stefan doing certain things crosses a moral event horizon despite the fact every character on the show has. He right out and admitted that he's a Stelena shipper and I didn't want to hear that out of either exec's mouth. The first few seasons- what Damon did to Jeremy was done to justify distance between Elena and Damon. The fact it ended up the way it did was it turned out, Nina leaving helped maintain the brothers having a right to a reconciliation arc and not blowing eight years of character development just for that nightmare rumour that Stefan was compelled and ended up with Elena. Julie was and is responsible for the fact it stayed on the brothers, hard- reading and watching interviews, it's clear Kevin didn't get the TVD universe priorities. The Originals is the best offshoot of TVD and whenever he speaks of it, it seems more it got in the way of whatever romantic path Klaus and Caroline had which is a terrible mindset... at the end of the day, Julie isn't perfect but we could have had worse. Stefan's death was about him doing it for his brother and Kevin Williamson doesn't get the death's meaning so he prattles on about how his sins outweighed a living redemption. The point was Stefan had all this in his future and chose to give it up so he could do this for Damon. Damon was willing to do the same for him and that's the death- not some deluded former showrunner's shipper mindset.

The point was Stefan had all this in his future and chose to give it up so he could do this for Damon. Damon was willing to do the same for him and that's the death- not some deluded former showrunner's shipper mindset. Stefan didnt need to die IMO period esp after he just got married to Caroline not caring that he was a human and she a vampire. Do you think that if Stefan had lived he would have ended up with Elena when he was married to Caroline. KW admitted that he was Stelena and Klaroline shipper but TO got in the way of Klaroline and NINA leaving got in the way of Stelena getting back together. Jp said in one of her interviews about KC that writers are fans of that ship too and they loved writing it and they wanted it to be acknowledged. Combined with al of this information/ interviews we have been getting lately, it is clear that Stefan's death was fan service to KC esp when you read JP interview about the character who actually died in the finale was not the one who was originally supposed to die. Why was Stefan to carry this guilt that he caused his brother to turn and he should sacrifice his happiness for his brother and Elena's happiness? That sacrifice didnt help in his redemption. Damon wanted to die for his brother too so why didnt he die? Steroline had just gotten married. Damon dying would have bring his redemption story to a satisfying ending IMO. After all he has done terrible stuff to all these people aka Jeremy, Caroline. Both of these heinous crimes were forgiven. He didnt even apologize to Caroline for what he did to her. From what we were shown just the desire to die for his brother, that was Damon's redemption apparently. I just dont think Stefan's death was justified in the finale. He was going to die eventually anyway maybe in 30 years so why kill him now? I think it was a fan service and nothing else. But that is just me. The only slight light in all this is that maybe Klaus will get his HEA with Caroline in the end after all. Even though he promised her that he will not come back in his life, he has loved her and pursued her for so many years now and it looks like that he has easily moved on from Cami. I am still not sure if Caroline loves him back or not. As per Carina we will find out in season 4 of TO.

Between a Delena Happily Ever After (HEA) and a Steroline HEA it was ALWAYS going to be Delena. IDC what JP or anyone else says, Steroline was not planned since S2 and Steroline was never meant to be epic. Stefan loved Damon (and apparently Lexi - who knew?) more than Caroline. That's what the finale says to me. Stefan would always always always put Damon's happiness and needs before anyone else. Maybe Stefan had some lingering guilt because Stefan forced Damon to turn - so he then forced Damon to become human so he could live his HEA with Elena. I can accept that.
But don't tell me that Steroline was epic or meant to be:
A) When you have Stefan deciding on his own (without any counsel from his wife) to sacrifice himself B) When there's no final goodbye between them C) When you end them with a voicemail (did she even say "I love you?" or was it just "I understand?") D) When Stefan finds peace with his original BFF, Lexi E) When you have Liz, not Stefan, looking over Caroline.
That smile and joy on his face when he saw Lexi? SHE'S the BFF he should have been with all along.
Now, I agree that Damon getting what he wants after all he's done does not sit well with me. The idea that Damon showing he was willing to die/sacrifice himself was enough to redeem him - that's BS IMO.
Stefan's death served Delena and as a side-note, an open-for-interpretation Klaroline.

ALl these reasons not to mention that they cut a Steroline scene from Finale makes me say that they did it for fan service to BOTH Delena and Klaroline. They could have ended Caroline alone but no, they had to bring Klaus back. All interviews are leading me to believe that potential Klaorline endgame was a major part in decision of killing Stefan.
I think they planned Steroline from start 202 (JP said in her latest interview too) but then Klaroline got unexpected response from audience/ fans so they decided to roll with it but then TO got accepted so it got dumped (KW confessed to it). Bringing Klaorline back now was total fan service esp when the show will not be renewed not to mention for the past three seasons they had been trying to break them, trying to convey their goodbyes, every damn season. JP was/ is catching at straws hoping that they will get a new show coz of Klaroline. I am not even sure how Klaroline will happen. Long distance relationship? Leave the school? Will she leave her kids? Or forever it takes will happens when they are grown up and leave?
Whenever a ship scenes are cut to accommodate another, it is fan service to the other ship. Those fans can be writers or audience. WE have seen many such scenarios in To too.
If Stefan had died fighting his enemies, I would have rolled with it and would have served the plot. It would have made sense. He being a human and all but the way he did, that was total suicide. I think he said his goodbye to Caroline. I thought they said that.. *confused*
I always liked LExi and Stefan. Some things came out of blue in the finale. That letter from KLaus didnt make a lick of sense when they had not even interacted face to face for 3 years. And then Alaric still has feelings for Caroline. That was a big surprise.
They brought a lot of people in the finale which made it very overwhelming. The finale looked like a fan service and definitely should have be spanned in two episodes rather than cramping in one.
Stefan's death was fan service to two ships.

This is the first time I'm hearing that Alaric (still) has feelings for Caroline? I thought their relationship was strictly business?
Here's the thing: if you're looking for closure for Klaroline to happen on TO, you will be disappointed. They will do what they did in the TVD finale and leave it open-ended. Maybe Klaus gets a thank-you letter from Caroline "and he smiles."
I really hope they don't get another spin-off. The spin-off would focus on Caroline and school. They'd introduce new characters, the gifted teens and focus on their drama. Klaus may or may not appear.
Personally, I'm 100% okay with an open-for-interpretation Klaroline ending. I don't need JP & Co to come in with another spin-off and destroy it.
To me, the letter made sense. Interacting with her wasn't necessary - somehow heard about the school and was impressed enough to write her a letter and send a donation.

I wish I could say I was happy with the finale, but as a Stefan fan, I feel his character was completely trashed to service other characters/couples. I see no reason why Stefan's actions were so awful that he had to die to be redeemed for them, but Damon's actions weren't. And as a former Klaroline fan, I wish I could say that I enjoyed the letter, but again, it felt disrespectful to Stefan's character. It also felt disrespectful to Camille's character and everything she and Klaus had on TO. Also, I feel like whatever connection Klaus and Caroline had, their moment has passed and the writers need to stop beating that horse. I feel like, realistically, those two would have moved on from each other a long time ago. All of this has me a little bit wary of what will happen on TO this season.
